MLG Names Her Fourth Secretary of Education; How Long Can He Last? The Betting Window Is Open, Plus: More Not Less Booze Makes Headway At Roundhouse

Arsenio Romero
The appointment of Arsenio Romero as the new NM Secretary of Education could not come soon enough.

Since the Super Bowl ended New Mexicans have been getting grumpy about having nothing to bet on. Now that Romero, the superintendent of the Los Lunas Public Schools, has been picked by MLG as her fourth education chief, it is game on.

The top bet is how long will Arsenio last? A roundup of Senior Alligator takes:

Joe, the over-under on Arsenio is a pretty respectable nine months. That is, only if he steps foot on the Fourth Floor just three times during that period. If he is up there more, the odds shift to a much shorter tenure because to see him is to fire him.

Another offered this analysis:

Joe, I am taking the "over" on that nine month bet but only if Arsenio gets an unlisted phone number, works from an out of state office like that other guy from Philadelphia and doesn't have his name appear in the newspaper after today. Otherwise, the Guv will be able to track him down and he might not make it a month.

There is more betting action:

Joe, Already my bookie is taking bets on who will be the fifth secretary of education. The favorite is Lt. Gov. Howie Morales. Remember soon after MLG assumed office Howie was named the first secretary but on a temporary basis, so he was never officially counted as the first secretary. If he came in after Arsenio, the Governor would technically be able to keep her body count at four. I'm betting that's good enough to get him in there.

Well, that's an outlook fraught with danger for Arsenio. We hope that the picture of him posted today isn't the last time we see him smile. Come to think of it, can we bet on that?

WRONG WAY SANTA FE

Only in Wrong Way Santa Fe do you get stuff like this in the state that suffers the worst death rate in the nation from too much booze:

House Bill 364 will allow local breweries to ship beer directly to customers. New Mexico already allows wineries to have a direct shipment permit. . ."One area we had not gotten to is shipping and this bill merely adds beer. . ." said a craft brewing lobbyist.

The bill passed on a 3 to 2 vote and now moves to the next committee, even as the much needed proposed increase in the alcohol tax that experts agree would reduce the rate of drinking and hopefully the death rate, stalls out

GOP Rep. Jason Harper, fresh from being bounced out of his House leadership post, came with this logic:

It doesn't matter what the price is, people are still going to find it and consume it.

Uh, Jason. We raised the price of cigarettes. People still consume them but in fewer numbers and we distribute the tax money to prevent smoking and disease. Again, only in Wrong Way Santa Fe.
