Wednesday, August 31, 2022With Polls Breaking Their Way Dems Now Worry About Amping Up Turnout, Plus: In Congress Races Vasquez And TLF Take To The TubeWith new polling showing blow out numbers for statewide Democratic candidates and a healthy lead for MLG over Mark Ronchetti in the Guv race, the Dems new worry has become turnout. In her first reaction to that Sunday Journal poll showing her ahead 47 to 40 over Ronchetti, MLG tweeted: We aren't taking anything for granted. No matter what anyone or any poll says, we need everyone to pay attention, show up and vote to keep New Mexico blue in November. And in a Tuesday fund-raising pitch MLG's campaign ignores the Journal poll and substitutes another less favorable one: Urgent: A poll shows Gov. Lujan Grisham just four points ahead of her far-right GOP opponent! She needs your urgent support to hit her emergency $150,000 end-of-month goal: Will you please donate now to keep New Mexico blue? The pitch did not say what poll showing a four point lead was being referenced but the Journal poll conducted August 19 thru 25 is the latest public survey. There has been no comment from the Ronchetti camp on the poll. Some of his social media supporters are pointing the finger at Libertarian candidate Karen Bedonie, saying she is drawing votes away from Ronchetti as she registers five percent of the vote. That falls into the category of worrying about things you have no control over. It's up to Ronchetti to find a message that breaks through. So far, that has proved elusive, Besides showing MLG cracking open the Guv race, the Journal survey signals the death knell for the statewide GOP candidates of Attorney General, State Treasurer, Secretary of State and Land Commissioner. The Auditor's race was not polled as Dem Joe Maestas has no GOP foe. The Dems swept the statewide offices in 2018 and are well-positioned to do so again in '22. While Dems are right to fret over folks staying home if the races don't generate more excitement, the Republicans face the same problem, although their voters are more prone to go to the polls no matter the backdrop. But don't expect a crash in turnout. Too many voters are motivated by the abortion issue and there will be a serious ground game by the Dems, if not the GOP. In '18 the Guv's race attracted about 700,000 voters and we suspect it will be in that area this go round. MTO AND NAME ID
It goes to show how hard it is to break through from these lower statewide offices but also raises questions for MTO who has had the political stage for years and at one time made a short-lived run for US Senate. If, as expected, she wins a four year term in November and finishes it, she will have served 10 years as SOS, the longest in state history. MOVE OVER REBA Move over Reba, Gabe needs some space. Southern congressional hopeful Gabe Vasquez goes up with this 30 second spot that follows the first ad from his opponent Rep. Yvette Herrell which features Reba, her photogenic Great Dane. Vasquez serves as his own attack dog in his spot, saying: New Mexico deserves better than extremist politicians who take orders from party leaders instead of us. So I'm running or Congress to fix it. . . And to protect a woman's right to chose, lower costs for families, and to give New Mexico what it deserves, I will stand up to any party leader. Vasquez does not want to be pegged as a progressive Dem as Herrell is doing, so there's that pledge to stand up to "any party leader." SERIOUS NORTH The voters in the mostly northern congressional district are greeted with a serious mood as Dem Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez, who is opposed by Republican Alexis Martinez Johnson in the safe Dem seat, comes with her first TV ad and recalls tragedy in her family: When you come from a small town, grow up with seven siblings and know the pain of losing two brothers to addiction and a sister to cancer, you learn something about struggle and understand what New Mexicans face everyday in a way that Washington needs to hear. I'm Teresa Leger Fernandez. I know what families face in good times and in bad. I approved this message because I will always fight for your family like it was my own. The 3rd Congressional District now runs farther south to take in such counties as Quay, Curry and Roosevelt. This is the home of New Mexico Politics. E-mail your news and comments.
