Wednesday, July 13, 2022Texas Tacos And Jill Biden; First Lady Slip-Up Causes Stir Here, Plus: That was Fast; Lundstrom Shoots Down Ronchetti Rebate Plan, And: More On Housing The Many HomelessIt doesn't take much to make news during these dog days of summer so Jill Biden's slip-up when she spoke of Hispanic diversity was enough to cause a tempest in the summer teapot and give one New Mexico congressional candidate an opportunity to sound off. The first lady told a civil rights group that Hispanics are. . . “as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio. Jill later apologized for her comments but that didn't stop ABQ GOP congressional hopeful Michelle Garcia Holmes from taking her to the woodshed: So disrespectful being compared to a food item. Hispanics are not tacos, Jill. We are human beings suffering because of your out of touch mentality. . .Democrat Washington elites are out of touch and always have been, feeding us and our families crumbs off their table after every election cycle, never a promise kept. A voice like mine is not being heard in Washington, but it will be when I'm elected. Time to educate the left that calling a Hispanic a taco is racist and extremely insulting. Hispanic voting is a regular theme in state political contests and in this case Garcia Holmes is taking on Dem Anglo and NM native Rep. Melanie Stansbury to represent the newly drawn 1st congressional district which includes much of ABQ but also now includes portions of Sandoval, Guadalupe, Torrance, Chaves, Lincoln, Valencia and De Baca counties. Large chunks of ABQ's Hispanic westside and precincts near downtown have been moved into the southern congressional district. The ABQ area First District now is the least Hispanic of the state's three congressional seats with an adult Hispanic population of 37.6 percent. The southern Second District is majority Hispanic at 56.1 percent and the northern Third District its 39.7 percent Hispanic. The major DC ratings firm rate the ABQ district safe Democratic so Garcia Holmes has to make hay when she can. As for those Texas tacos, does anyone around here say, "let's grab some breakfast tacos?" No way. Breakfast burritos, for sure. But breakfast tacos? Just another reason not to trust those Texans. THAT WAS FAST GOP Guv nominee Mark Ronchetti tried to join the pork party that the Guv and legislature have been throwing this year with the huge surplus revenues from the oil boom. But Ronchetti's plan to make permanent the rebates like those MLG's administration is sending out this summer was killed in the crib by Legislative Finance Committee Chair Party Lundstrom who said. . . Mandating annual tax rebates would be an “irresponsible” approach to budgeting. “I would never agree to something like that until I knew what the revenue amounts were. No questions? Then we move right along. . . HOUSING THE HOMELESS A concerted effort to build affordable housing to ease the homeless problem in ABQ--as we outlined in a blog this week--won't work unless another piece of the puzzle is resolved. That's according to an anonymous reader who has wrestled with the matter: Joe, even if we had endless resources to build affordable housing, it would not solve ABQ's crime and homeless problem. The root of the problem is drugs and until we come up with a creative solution for drug abuse, crime will continue to spiral out of control.
My 30 year old nephew is a meth addict so I can tell you first hand that these people don't care one bit about housing. In fact they do not care about anything other than finding their next fix. Especially the ones who are hooked on "the devil" (that's what my nephew and his friends call Meth). We have provided my nephew with multiple vehicles (in hopes he would find work). He has totaled them all. We have provided him with a house (which he and his junky friend literally destroyed). About the only thing he is still willing to accept is money which we don't give and food which he accepts only if he is high (getting high always comes first).
The drugs create a complete inability to care about anything. Not family, not children, not food, not shelter. Until we figure out a way to successfully rehab these individuals, all the money in the world for housing won't make a difference.
THE BOTTOM LINES In referencing the 2022 capital outlay bill approved by the last session of the legislature we said in a first draft that it was over $800 billion. The correct amount is over $800 million. This is the Home of New Mexico Politics. |
